Just an hour's drive out of London into Surrey, the National Trust Standen House is great for a day out. The country air and all that outdoor space will tire out the kids, and parents can grab a little bit of culture too.
We love it because... It's calm and quiet (well, until our little one arrived) with lots of little gardens to explore outside as well as the historical attractions in the main house. As well as a vegetable patch with herbs to smell and lots of beautiful flower gardens, there's a chicken coop and cows wandering the fields, as well as plenty of flat lawns for games. AND you can picnic anywhere on the grounds (although there's a lovely cafe too).
Kids will love the... Adventure 'playground', which is made from natural woodland materials and includes things like tree stumps to jump on, dens made out of sticks and a maze. There's also kids activities in the conservatory in the main house for some indoor fun.
We spotted... longer walks for more adventurous families down to the nearby Weir Reservoir - you can get walking trail maps from the Visitor Center.
