Most South Londoners have heard of the local Horniman Museum, famous for the huge stuffed walrus! However, if your children don't have the attention span for a museum, or are too noisy to hang out with the visiting history buffs, the Horniman gardens are a fantastic compromise.
We loved it because... Nestled between East Dulwich, Forest Hill, Sydenham and Crystal Palace, the Horniman museum and gardens is the perfect spot to enjoy outdoor activities overlooking the city. There's so much going on, from various beautiful and educational gardens, outdoor musical instruments and a mini farm, to playgrounds, a Saturday Farmer's Market and loads of organised activities for kids - especially over the summer holidays.
Top tip... The Horniman gardens have so many perfect spots for a picnic. There are benches dotted around, loads of luscious green areas over looking an amazing city view, as well as the beautiful conservatory for a rainy day option. If you don't fancy a picnic there's a great cafe with a good menu for both kids and adults.
We spotted... Purple basil, thyme, lentils, chickpeas and edamame beans...amongst hundreds of other gorgeous produce in the food gardens. There's also a medicinal garden, wild flowers and a nature trail, so lots to see and do for the budding gardeners. For the animal lovers, we saw rabbits, chicken, goats, alpacas to name but a few in the mini animal farm.
