Tell us about The Bright Company
We are a British sleepwear and essentials brand, equally appealing to children and adults.
What tips would you give to women who want to make the most of maternity leave?
Relax! It's over before you know it, enjoy the days when you stay in your PJs and just chill with your baby, you won't get them back, especially as they get older. Also make the most of being able to go to galleries etc with a small newborn on a Wednesday morning in term time when they are empty. Try to avoid any competitive mothering, believe in yourself, none of us know what we are doing, it's all a fluke so just stay strong, and believe what you are doing is best for you and your baby and don't worry about what other people are doing.
When, how and why did you decide to change your career?
I decided on maternity leave that I would like to do something else and change things up a little, I did go back to work but as soon as my first Far East trip was looming I was very clear that I really didn't want to go and therefore my existing job wasn't going to work for us as a family any more. It took months of cold calling and a year to get some products out with a factory.
What are your tips for keeping your home stylish with kids?
De-clutter, there is enough tidying anyway with kids, so less is more. We regularly send toys to the charity shop that our children are no longer playing with, also toy storage that children can use and tidy up themselves is good. Try to discourage the awful plastic toys from friends and family, they look ugly and there are plenty of lovely toys that your children will enjoy more and get more from that won't break and end up in landfill in a few weeks!
Where do you shop?
Mostly at independent shops (bar my Cos habit!). At Christmas, I pledged to only buy from independents again. Some of my favourite shops and brands are Studio NL, Molly Meg, Love Frankie, Anorak, Beau Loves and The Collective Boutique for grown up friends.
Where do you like to hang out in London?
We lived in South East for many years so we spend a lot of time around Dulwich and Peckham seeing friends. But what I miss most of all is the museums - the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, the V&A, London Transport Museum, Horniman Museum and Tate Modern - they are all fab for kids and adults alike!
What’s next for The Bright Company?
We will be opening up our Brighton Studio in Spring during the Brighton Festival and we are adding some lovely products for SS16 which will be out in February.
